Last year, a Forbes article characterized entrepreneurship as the new “Women’s Movement” because of the growing numbers of women opting to leave the traditional workforce and start their own companies.
Last week, a survey sponsored by tech giant Dell revealed that with 8 million women-led businesses, the United States is the best country in the world for female entrepreneurship.
The trend is encouraging and it’s gaining attention in Memphis as more local programs and training opportunities become available to encourage and support female entrepreneurship.
First up on Thursday, from 8:30 to 10:50 a.m., check out the latest installment in the Prosperity Series offered by U.S. Learning.
The program will be held at Memphis Botanic Garden, 750 Cherry, and feature social media strategist Kurt Shaver of The Sales Foundry. He will discuss how to maximize sites such as LinkedIn for B2B purposes. Admission is free for Prosperity Series members, $149 for others.

From noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, the Society of Entrepreneurs welcomes local business leader, author and consultant Terri Murphy to discuss “Ramp up Your Communication to Convert More Prospects to Profits.” Murphy will talk about emerging marketing avenues that provide better opportunities to attract clients and increase sales.
The program includes lunch and will be held at Jim’s Place, 518 South Perkins Extd. Cost is $25 and reservations are required.
